Abstract

Global vegetation distributions underwent changes due to climatic oscillations, and was restricted to refuges over the Quaternary period. Phylogeography assess the spatial structure of genetic diversity within populations, and helps to understand species distributions in the past and present time. Ficus genus is widely distributed and presents a considerable plasticity in the tropics. Therefore fig trees constitute a formidable tool for the study of Quaternary environmental variation. This study will contribute to a better understanding of tropical vegetation dynamics during Quaternary period. We will study the phylogeographic patterns of two Ficus species (F. insipida and F. citrifolia)with different biology and ecology. These fig trees species are suitable for a comparative analysis to evaluate whether biological and ecological differences resultedin distinct patterns of responses to Quaternary environmental fluctuations. Samplingwill cover the whole range of species distribution. Phylogeographic relationships andgenetic diversity between populations of the two Ficus species will be assessed on noncoding sequences of the chloroplast DNA and microsatellites sequences of the nuclear DNA.
