The SDFP often affects athletes and sedentary female population causing diffuse pain or previous retropatellar that is exacerbated during functional activities such as walking up and down steps, stand for a long time sitting, squatting or kneeling, among others. Although its etiology remains unclear, it is known that there is a physiological change in the patellofemoral joint resulting from an instability of the patella, leaving it susceptible to the medial or lateral displacement during movement of knee extension. It is believed that this patellar instability is caused by an imbalance between the action of the vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM), affecting the alignment of the patella in the intercondylar groove. The electromyographic study of the VL and VM muscles during stair climbing is often used for analysis of SDFP, because the EMG allows an analysis of electrical signals from muscle, while the ladder provides an exacerbation of the balanced activity of VL and VM muscles during activity . Research in this area are carried out, but methodological differences occur, especially with regard to the processing methods of electromyographic (EMG), contributing to the uncertainties regarding the causes of SDFP. In this context, this project aims to test the feasibility and reproducibility of a parameter-specific indicator of the frequency spectrum of the EMG signal for the characterization of SDFP, represented by bands of low intensity (15 to 45 Hz), medium ( 45 to 96Hz) and high frequency (96 to 400Hz) in an experiment involving a functional activity of stair climbing.
