Abstract

The thoracic spine establishes relationship with the cervical spine, in the same way that it communicates with temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The cervical manipulation, technique commonly used in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) individuals, can submit patients to risks. Due to the above aspects, thoracic spine manipulation, that aims to restore the normal mechanics of the manipulated segment and break the nociceptive reflex in the segment with restriction of movement, may have positive effect on TMD. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of T1 vertebra manipulation about the signs and symptoms of this disorder. For this, will be selected 20 women aged between 18 and 40 years diagnosed with TMD confirmed by Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders and cervical dysfunction in accordance with the Neck Disability Index. These will be equally divided in experimental group, which will be held the technique and Placebo Group wherein will be held a technique without therapeutic effect. All volunteers will be submitted to algometry and electromyographic evaluation of the masticatory muscles, range of motion of mandibular depression and visual analogue scale, before the application of the technique, immediately and 2 to 4 days after. At the end of the experiment the groups will be compared through these instruments, using the appropriate statistical test and considered p <0.005.
