Abstract

The subarachnoid injection of anesthetics or analgesics has been associated with inhalatory anesthesia to increase the analgesia intra and post operative . Spinal ketamine, a N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, has been used to prevent or treat pain induced by surgical procedures. These antinociceptive effects of ketamine, was observed after the subarachnoid injection in dogs and rats and was potentiated by the ifenprodil, an antagonist of polyamine site, located on the NMDA receptor complex. There are no published data regarding the spinal use of this drugs in horses submitted to the inhalation anesthesia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the cardiorespiratory effects of ketamine and ifenprodil subarachnoid injection in horses anesthetized with sevoflurane.
