Abstract

The genus Cyphorhinus is a member of the family Troglodytidae, a group of insectivorous passerine birds, found primarily in the New World and which includes three species that occur from Honduras to the North of Mato Grosso. Only Cyphorhinus arada occurs in Brazil, it's a polytypic specie, endemic from the Amazon. It is popularly known as the musican wren as an allusion to his melodious and remarkable song. Currently, this complex comprises eight subspecies: C. a. arada, C. a. salvini, C. a. modulator, C. a. transfluvialis, C. a. interpositus, C. a. griseolateralis, C. a. urbanoi and C. a. faroensis. A large geographical variation has been detected in this group, both in plumage patterns and in the vocalizations. Since the description of these taxa different taxonomic treatments were adopted, however, no extensive taxonomic review was conducted. Therefore, the objective of this project is to review the taxonomy of the complex Cyphorhinus arada based on morphological and vocal characters to identify independent evolutionary units and clarify phylogenetics and biogeographics relationships. Will be analyzed specimens deposited in scientific collections in Brazil and abroad, and there will be collects of additional material in areas considered important for this project. Morphological analysis will include plumage patterns and morphometry. Vocalizations characters will be inferred through sonograms. The phylogenies will be estimated using the program PAUP 4.10, through the criterion of maximum parsimony, the resulting cladogram will be rooted based on external groups. For the species delimitation the criterion adopted will be the diagnosability of the populations. (AU)
