Abstract

For many years, increasingly, hybrid materials have been object of attention and study by the academic community because of their unique characteristics and properties. The sol-gel process, with the hydrolysis and condensation reactions makes possible the preparation of these materials on simple routes and low cost, due to its great versatility, and low temperatures, use of alkoxides precursors, among others. The incorporation of lanthanide ions in hybrid matrices awakened interest in diverse areas such as manufacturing of optical amplifiers, waveguides, OLEDs, solid-state lasers, etc.. However, lanthanide ions, especially europium III ion, have low absorption coefficient limiting some of its applications. Thus, coordination compounds have been used to amplify the main property of these ions, the luminescence. Appropriate organic ligands with high absorption coefficient sensitize the emission of lanthanide ions, promoting a better yield of luminescence through the antenna effect, an effect that causes the binder to absorb and transfer energy to the ion emitting it in the form of radiation lengths desired wave. The incorporation of lanthanide ions in complex matrices hybrid makes these materials promising for use as luminescent markers.
