Abstract High concentrations of volatile organic carbon (VOC) in rainwater were measured in the city of Araraquara and it is suspected that this high concentration is due to the large number of vehicles running on ethanol, what has increased considerably in Brazil in recent years. Therefore, knowledge of the atmospheric concentration of aldehydes and alcohols levels is important for the assessment of air pollution and to elucidate possible sources of these compounds. This project aims to assess possible correlations between the concentrations of VOCs, determined using carbon analyzer, and the concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and ethanol using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in rainwater samples.
