Abstract

This research plan proposes the use of the model Soil-Water-Atmosphere-Plant (SWAP) in combination with the model Agricultural Nutrient model (ANIMO) to simulate the fate of nitrogen (N) from N-15 labeled urea fertigated coffee culture . The subjects of the doctoral program will be held in the first half of 2012 and then will start the thesis with a thorough literature review and studies on the model SWAP/ANIMO and your operation. For the second half of 2012 there will be a training in the use of SWAP/ANIMO at the University of Wageningen, the Netherlands. The model calibration will be made with experimental data already collected in previous studies, which used the isotope N-15 as a tracer of the path of N derived from fertilizer in the soil under coffee cultivation in the western state of Bahia. The modeling in agriculture aims to describe mathematically the processes of the soil-plant-atmosphere, and answer questions that could only be answered by developing costly and time-consuming experiments. Here the model SWAP/ANIMO will be used to study the dynamics of N from the soil solution in a culture of coffee and so investigate the behavior of this nutrient in different situations of application of nitrogen fertilizer and irrigation schemes and rain. The doctoral program concludes with the thesis defense scheduled for 2014.
