Abstract

The main goal of this project is to develop a basic understanding of the microscopic magnetic properties and the related physical mechanisms at interface structure of half-metallic Heusler alloys of X2YZ/MgO. Ultrathin films (up to a few monolayer's) of X2YZ and thick films(several monolayer) will be deposited by Sputering and alternatively with MBE on MgO (001) substrate under ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) conditions. In order to establish an understanding of the magnetic properties of this material at an interface, the electronic and magnetic structure of the films will be studied by different techniques. To determine the electronic structure at the interface of the barrier, we will apply photon absorption and photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. For the magnetic characterization we shall use the in-situ XMCD technique combined with ex-situ MOKE measurements. For this purpose, a new facility, involving an UHV chamber specially designed to perform in-situ XMCD measurements with variable magnetic field up to ± 2T was constructed and will be used during this project.
