Abstract

Melatonin is responsible for carrying the photoperiodic information to the body. This hormone passes this Information on variations in the length of the night during the year (seasonal variations) to the body, allowing it to determine appropriate responses to environmental changes. Therefore, regulates various cellular functions, including the regulation of reproductive function. In addition, the concentration of melatonin is three times higher in follicular fluid than in blood circulation, which may generate a speculation on the melatonin action during ovulation. More recent studies have identified melatonin receptors type I and II in granulosa cells, as well as this hormone acts through cyclic AMP and interacts with the estrogen in rat cell culture. However, little is known about the gene and molecular mechanisms that melatonin influence the function of granulosa cells that may impact the fertility. For this reason, we propose the functional study to assess the molecular pathways and gene action of melatonin on ovarian granulosa cells of women with infertility and submitted to treatment in vitro fertilization program.
