Laryngeal manual therapy is directed chiefly at the sternocleidomastoid muscles at the start of the intervention and, subsequently, at the supralaryngeal area. The rationale for targeting these areas, and this order, is based on the clinical observation that in many patients presenting with muscular tension dysphonia the sternocleidomastoid muscles are excessively tense. The primary aim of manual laryngeal therapy in the perilaryngeal, laryngeal area and neck muscles is to relax the excessively tense musculature which inhibits normal phonatory function. Clinical experience suggests that massage of these muscles lateral to the larynx reduces this tension, thereby reducing the patient's discomfort, and consequently their distress and anxiety, at an early stage of the intervention. The aim of this study is to evaluate the immediate effect of laryngeal manual therapy on voice quality of dysphonic functional individuals and of individuals without vocal complaints. Subjects will be 30 male and female aged between 18 and 45 years. Subjects are divided in two groups: Experimental Group (EG) - 15 individuals with functional dysphonia; Control Group (CG) - 15 individuals with normal voices and no vocal complaints. After signing the informed consent, the individuals will response a questionnaire with questions about age, occupation, possible vocal and laryngeal symptoms and symptoms of musculoskeletal pain in the neck and larynx; will use visual analog scales to report musculoskeletal pain on the cervical and laryngeal areas and their voices will be recorded. These procedures will performer before and after the appliance of laryngeal manual therapy and the results will be compared. The laryngeal manual therapy will be applied for 20 minutes. During this procedure, the examining clinician stands behind the individual who is seated in a low-backed chair. The clinician ensures that the subject is seated well back on the seat of the chair, that the spine is straight and that the head is in neutral position, so that the chin is not raised, depressed, retracted, or protruded. The therapist will do the massage on the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the larynx in both sides. All evaluation will take place before and after the realization of this procedure in both groups. Data will be analyzed statistically using parametric tests.
