Abstract

The dissertation will discuss Dostoevsky's contribution to the Westernizers-Slavophiles debate that was typical of the Russian nineteenth century. This shall be done through the comparative analysis of "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions" (1863) - a collection of articles on the author's impressions of his first trip to Europe, in 1862 - and another important travelogue that preceded Dostoevsky's, "Letters From France and Italy", (1855), by Aleksandr Gertsen (Herzen). We understand that these two works, whose authors take rather divergent positions within the Westernizers-Slavophiles spectrum, synthesize the political views of each of them, chiefly on what concerns the complex relationship between Russia and the West. By comparing Dostoevsky with one of the main spokesmen of his ideological antagonists, we intend to throw some light on strategic aspects of his political view.
