Abstract

Tobacco smoke is the most preventable cause of death in the world including ischaemic heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In addition, the health care utilization by patients with active smoking is higher when compared to non smokers. Therefore, the best strategy to reduce the costs on health care is smoking cessation. However, the effectiveness of how smoking cessation program in different diseases at public hospital in Brazil was not performed yet. The objective of this study is evaluate and compare the smoking cessation rate in exacerbated COPD and ischaemic heart disease hospitalized patients with intensive smoking cessation intervention. Methods: 40 hospitalized patients with ischaemic heart disease and 40 exacerbated COPD patients admitted at public hospital will be evaluate by clinical data, smoking history, behavior modification to stop smoking, nicotine dependence score, anxiety and depression scale and laboratorial analysis. All patients will receive the self-help material to stop smoking and specific medication to control the withdraw symptoms. Individual counseling will be perform by the same trained group during 30 minutes twice per week during hospitalization and after hospital discharge the patients will be encourage to continue in the smoking cessation multiprofessional group treatment during one hour for four weeks. The smoking cessation rate will be evaluated after one and tree months after hospital discharge.
