Qualitative evaluation of resin tags formation on intact and grounded enamel with new self-etching adhesives

Abstract

Self-etching adhesives promote less demineralization than total-etching systems on enamel surface, which may impair the longevity of restorations. Thus, ground enamel or etching before self-etching adhesive systems application have been reported and encouraged. Since new all-in-one self-etching adhesives systems are commercially available, the purpose of this study is to compare resin tags formation on intact and grounded enamel using all-in-one self-etching adhesive and total-etching adhesive system submitted or not to thermal cycling by polarized light microscopy (PLM) analysis. Therefore, 30 healthy molars will be randomly divided into 6 groups (n=5), according to the adhesive system and the enamel surface: G1 - Single Bond Plus Adper (SB) / intact enamel (IE), G2 - SB /ground enamel (GE), G3 - Clearfil Tri-S Bond (CTS) / EI; G4 - CTS / WE; G5 - 37% Phosphoric Acid (PA) + CTS / EI and G6 - AF +CTS / GE. Three samples from each group will receive thermal cycling (20.000 cycles) alternating with thermal baths of 5°C and 55°C with a dwell time of 60s in each bath. All specimens will be cutted into 1.5-mm slices, manually grinded using abrasive papers #320, #400, #600, #1200 and polished. Then, tags analysis will be performed after 1-minute treatment in 40% nitric acid to complete enamel demineralization, leaving only the adhesive and composite resin portion. The images will be analyzed by quantification and measuring of tags formation in the middle area of each interface. Data will be statistically analyzed (5% significance level).
