Abstract

Robert Brandom develops a rationalism that considers rational beings like users of concepts and sensitive to the "force" of reasons. This idea is explored from a central notion from the work by philosopher Wilfrid Sellars, "the logical space of reasons". This space is a conceptual, linguistic and normative framework by which rational beings can apply concepts, give and justify reasons. However, the main feature of logical space is the inferential articulation, ie, applying concepts, giving reasons and justifying them are activities that can only be performed in an inferential context. This research aims to discuss and analyze this rationality conception emphasizing the centrality of the inference concept. It also intends to show that inferentialist rationalism, as constructed by Brandom, presents itself as a really new proposal to explain what we mean by rationality, with consequences for epistemology, philosophy of language and logic of today.
