Abstract

The research proposed here has the intention to sociologically analyze the trajectories and the works of a set of Sao Paulo filmmakers which, according to our central hypothesis, were located along the 1960s and 1970s in an "in-between place", having at one side the "Cinema Novo" - strong and long-lived reference in the brazilian cinematic sphere even after it was ended as a movement - and at the other side the conditions of cinematic production that were presented in Sao Paulo, which were largely related to the Sao Paulo "Boca do Lixo". We also adopt the hypothesis that the conditions of the "in-between place" and the fact of they were situated in the São Paulo metropolis gave to these filmmakers perspectives that were different from those of their contemporaries, particularly with regard to addressing the issue of labor and cultural industry. Taking as fundamental theoretical referencial the propositions of Raymond Williams (1977, 2000), we attempt to overcome the dichotomy between "externalist" and "internalist" approaches, understanding that cultural production is part of a whole social process to be unraveled in the interrelationship among its elements. Thus, we intend to analyze the trajectories of filmmakers in relation to each other, to the cinematic sphere and to the socio-historical context, as well as analyze the filmic works produced by them, examining the meanings they bring in their audiovisual construction.
