Abstract Urbanization and increasing pollution of coasts mainly through domestic and industrial effluents are a great concern for the preservation of marine aquatic environment. In this context it is necessary to evaluate the toxicity of chemicals using representative organisms of this environment, which will serve as a source of data to improve regulations and better protect marine aquatic life. This work presents an alternative native test organism, the amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis. This organism has been used worldwide in studies of genetics and evolution and in this work it will be used in toxicity tests with reference substances and emerging contaminants. This study may expand the existing alternatives of testing organisms to be used in marine toxicity tests. | |
