Abstract This research proposal aims to investigate the pathological changes in tissues of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), identify possible diseases and evaluate the occurrence of Morbillivirus infection in selected tissues using immunohistopathological techniques. We intend to review histopathological material selected from 250 samples of skin from whales, as well as to review histopathological slides of 91 samples obtained during necropsy examination of eight humpback whales that stranded along the Brazilian coast. Suggestive cases of infection by Morbillivirus sp. will be analyzed applying immunohistochemical techniques. Special tissue staining methods, as well as immunohistopathological techniques for research of other pathogenic organisms, may be used when appropriate and feasible. It is expected that the results of this research will bring an important contribution to the development of the current doctoral thesis, especially in relation to diagnostic methods, and interpretation of pathological changes in humpback whales.
