Abstract

In livestock, greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions occur through enteric fermentation (grazing ruminants) and from animal waste. The liquid waste (urine) may promote mainly nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. This gas is produced in the soil microbial processes of nitrification - the mineralization of organic matter and denitrification - the reduction of nitrate-N. The objective of this research will be estimate N2O emissions from soil due to addition of cattle urine in extensive livestock system. To do that, it was conducted field experiments and incubation experiments to determine the N2O emission factor in the urine. Moreoever, incubation experiments will be conducted in the laboratory to verify the may change the physico-chemical soil characteristics due to the addition of urine to the soil. Statistical analysis and models will be used for the development of mathematical modeling results. The information obtained from this research may serve as a scientific basis for drawing up inventories of GHG emissions with different levels of complexity (Business, Regional or National) to extensive livestock farming of cattle.
