Abstract

"The City of the Sun", by Tommaso Campanella, is one of the works that defines the utopian literary genre, whose key element is the intrinsic connection with the story. Fundamental concepts of political modernity are contained in the utopia, such as the idea of sovereignty, the legislative prerogative of state power, the scientific approach, the human reason as a power structures source. The enthusiasm of the utopian socialists with "The City of the Sun", especially with regard to communism of property and to the principle of equality among men, demonstrates its importance for the understanding of political thought over time. The objective of this research at "Facoltà di Scienze Politiche - Dipartimento di Studi sullo Stato" ("Università degli Studi di Firenze") is to enhance my studies on the modern political doctrine with the reference to utopia campanelliana.
