This work seeks the development of PtSn/MWNT and PtCe/MWNT electrocatalysts using functionalized or not carbon nanotubes to improve the electrocatalytic activity in the electrocatalisys during the oxidation reactions of ethanol, methanol and mixtures of these alcohols in different proportions for a future application in fuel cells. The materials will be initially prepared by the polymeric precursor method, but other preparation methods may be used in order to vary the alloy degree in the PtSn/MWNT electrocatalyst. The following characterization techniques will be used in the electrocatalysts: XRD, XPS, TEM, ATR-FTIR. Besides, electrochemical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and spectroelectrochemistry (ATR-FTIR "in situ") will be used to evaluate the general electrochemical behavior of the materials, analyze the electrocatalytic activity of the electrocatalysts and the reactions paths for the oxidation of ethanol, methanol and their mixtures. The best materials will be tested in a direct alcohol fuel cell.
