Abstract

This research project aims to present an opportunity for reflection about the ideal of manhood of men's 1st.AD Romans, realizing this ideal as political and social understanding of the citizen within an official discourse. Having as source the epigrams of Martial, will seek to understand the representations developed by Marcial about this ideal and homoerotic relations. For the analysis of this source will be held the same interpretation of having been based on the concepts of interpretation and superinterpretation of Umberto Eco and the concept of representation enunciated by Roger Chartier It is possible to develop a broader conception, fluid, malleable not only about Roman sexuality, but also the manhood and homoeroticism. List a series of elements that can influence this construction of masculinity and show the different views that exist within the Roman society, making it seem the complexity of this individual and its constitution within Rome.
