Abstract

Reproduction is a dynamic process that involves physiological changes, modulated by environmental factors, which are reflected on the broodstock behavior, steroid production and gonadal morphology. Information on reproductive biology are an important aspect for the rearing fish, be for commercial or conservation interest. The "surubim do Iguaçu" (Steindachneridion melanodermatum) is a catfish endemic to the Iguaçu River and the species distribution is limited to areas between reservoirs. This fish presenting low catch rates and is included in restocking programs the Iguaçu River since 1996. In addition, is indicated as a potential specie for fish farming. Even artificially reproduced, the reproductive dynamics of the specie is unclear. The goal of this project is propose the study of reproductive aspects of this species in captive conditions, by observation the gonads histology and hormonal fluctuations, in male and females, from the first year old, to determine the first maturation, pattern of gonads development and identification of the period reproductive. This information is important to the increased production of eggs and larvae of freshwater fish
