Gender and health: a focus on the adult male population in population-based study

Abstract

For long time women have been the focus of health studies related to gender, while little research to investigate the health conditions of men. The male population has high rates of premature mortality, and also display high rates of chronic conditions and serious and adopt more often unhealthy behaviors. In this context, it is important to know the profile of gender inequalities, considering the health-related behaviors, health status and use of health services. The present study aims to assess health inequalities related to gender, in the 20 years or older living in Campinas. Data were collected through a household survey of health, a cross-sectional study of population-based cluster sampling in two stages, held in Campinas in 2008-2009. Among the variables included in this study are the demographic characteristics, the behaviors related to health, the health status and use of health services. To estimate the prevalence and associations, will be using the chi-square test, with significance level of 5% and to obtain the prevalence ratios (PR) and their respective confidence intervals, there will be a Poisson regression. The analyzes will be performed using the STATA version 11, considering the weights from the sampling design.
