Abstract

By considering relevant the influence of the muscles on the function of the stomatognathic system, this study seeks to assess the behavior and the performance of the masticatory muscles with the presence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. It also aims to compare the electromyographic activity, the thickness of the masseter and temporal muscles, the bite force and masticatory efficiency among healthy individuals and individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus and arterial hypo and hypertension. The electromyographic activity will be assessed using the BR-1 Myosystem electromyograph. Muscle thickness will be analyzed by acquiring images of the masseter and temporal muscles at rest and maximal dental clenching using the Sono Site Titan portable ultrasound. The maximum molar bite force (right and left) values will be obtained using a digital dynamometer model IDDK (Kratos). Masticatory efficiency will be evaluated through the colorimetric method with the beads in habitual chewing, right and left unilateral chewing. The dental health conditions, socio-economic aspects and eating habits will also be considered. The results of this study will allow the full assessment of the morphological and functional aspects of the stomatognathic system in individuals with type 2 diabetes and hypo and hypertension making diagnoses and prognoses easier, and therefore, provide a better choice of treatment for those individuals.
