Abstract

High performance applications, such as those in aircrafts, require materials with an exceptional combination of mechanical properties, including high strength, toughness and fatigue resistance. The VART 100 steel is a new material developed by Villares Metals, in substitution to the SAE 300M steel. This new steel has a differentiated chemical composition with higher nickel, chromium and molybdenum contend, lower carbon contend and cobalt addition, This work is part of a study involving the development of the VART 100 steel, where besides impact toughness and fatigue for crack nucleation, other mechanical and metallurgical properties has been evaluated. The aim of this work is to evaluate and impact toughness and fatigue life of VART 100 steel, and compare this results with the ones from the SAE 300M steel. Therefore, metallographic examination, tensile tests, Charpy impact tests and fatigue S-N tests were carried out following the ASTM E8M, ASTM E23 e ASTM 466 standards. After testing, the fracture surface will be analyzed using an electronic microscope for fatigue crack nucleation sites. (AU)
