Abstract

The 19th century is a period of great European migratory waves towards the American continent, in which Brazil was one of the chosen destinies. Among all people from different nationalities who came to our country, the Germans constituted a group which strongly aimed to the preservation of their culture, creating different societies in order to do so. They tried to preserve characteristics such as their language, traditions, food manners, amusements, as well as means to preserve their health, from which we can highlight the practice of gymnastics. Developed between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, German gymnastics was based on medical and pedagogical theories, as well as the German nationalist movement of the beginning of the 1800's. It's best structured expression - Turnen - was used as means to regenerate the population and to promote the discipline required for daily work and homeland defense. This research aims to comprehend and analyze the German gymnastics as a specific means for body education, a cultural element to be preserved and an act of living together cultivated by these immigrants in associations founded for the practice of gymnastics in south and southeast Brazil, during the period between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of World War II.
