Abstract

With the progress of science and technology, the study and application of new materials have become more frequent. An example of the application of these new materials is luminescent devices LED (Light Emitting Diodes) and OLED (Organic Light Emitter Diode). Matrices based on inorganic silicates synthesized by sol-gel and activated with rare-earth ions (Group of Lanthanides that includes scandium and yttrium), especially Eu (III), have potential application in the preparation of luminescent materials usable for the production of modified electrodes, in the manufacture of lasers or directly as luminescent markers. The rare earth elements are constantly being investigated because of their luminescent properties related to the existence of many metastable levels that lead to radiative transitions from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region. In the trivalent rare earth, such as Eu (III), light emission occurs due to the internal optical transitions between f sublevels. The use of rare-earth ions is usually associated with their ability to replace cations with similar properties in inorganic host lattices such as silicates. The silicates are the inorganic groups of compounds based on silicon and oxygen that can be classified according to the shape that SiO44- tetrahedrons bind each other to form a crystal lattice that can be distorted due to the presence of doping ions such as Eu(III). The simplest silicates, the orthosilicates, are built as tetrahedral units of isolated SiO44- and the electrical neutrality is provided by cations regularly spaced along the chain. The synthesis of a phosphor-based on silicates, such as Ba2SiO4: Eu (III) can be carried out by the sol-gel methodology, a process that is applied to provide optical materials under low temperatures synthesis. The sol-gel process has great importance in many areas; it allows the preparation of a variety of materials such as fibers, thin films, and glass. The objective of the present study is to investigate the optical properties of barium silicate doped with Eu(III) in different percentages synthesized by sol-gel from barium acetate and TEOS (tetraethoxysilane) activated with Eu(III) varying the synthesis conditions such as catalyst, temperature, and also to study the effect of the calcination temperature of the xerogel obtained. The aim is to investigate the structural characteristics of the system (sites occupied by Eu(III) in the silicate array) monitoring the possible properties that could arise in the process of searching for useful applications for these phosphors with specific features.(AU)
