Abstract

Clusters and groups of galaxies provide the best scenario to study the influence of the envi-ronment on galaxy evolution and formation.Fossil groups seem to be the missing link between the massive galaxy clusters and the poorgalaxy groups. The scenario of formation traditionally proposed for the brightest galaxy of thesesystems is currently under debate. We propose a ultraviolet-optical probe of the brightest galaxiesof fossil groups in the course of the last billion years in order to quantify the actual impact ofmergers in the formation of the representative galaxy of these groups.Galaxies in clusters and groups are under the influence a plethora of environmental processeswhich arises as an unresolved puzzle. We propose a study of the environmental impact on galaxyproperties in a sample of galaxy clusters in the Local Universe. This sample is covering a widerange of a number of environmental conditions and galaxy and cluster properties/observables.This will help to disentangle and clarify the specific importance of each environmentalmechanism in modulating the galaxy properties.
