Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate the physical properties and dynamics of particles (drag coefficient) of different biomasses (Canadian and Brazilian). This is the second part of work that it has been developed since 2010 in collaboration of Prof. Grace and Prof. Sokhansanj from The Univeristy of British Columbia. The main results are: dynamic behavior (rotation and translation) or packing of biomass particles depends of its shape factor and diameter; the biomass particles can be classified as regular or irregular non-spherical particles. Those two parameters are fundamentals to define the best chemical reactor design applied to clean energy; the projected area ratio depends on the orientation of the particles in the equipment used; for large particles and particles with L>>>dp, the third dimension is very important because our biomass particles are cylindrical (sugarcane bagasse), sawdust wood (rectangular) and rice husk (prolate spheroid); the drag coefficient correlations are related with fluid and particle physical properties considering Rep and f.
