Abstract

The ketogenic diet is a nonpharmacological treatment prescribed especially for children and utilized in most specialized centers for patients with refractory epilepsy. The composition of the ketogenic diet is based on high fat, low carbohydrate, moderate protein, and production of ketone bodies is the probable mechanism involved in the control of seizures. The relationship between the treatment of a ketogenic diet and oxidative changes in characteristics, physical and lipid are not well established. Some studies show a significant increase in total cholesterol and triglycerides in children being treated with the ketogenic diet, although other studies have shown that changes in lipid profile in the long term do not appear to be significant, and the influence of these changes on coronary heart disease is not well knowledge. The studies in the last two decades has shown that in addition to changes in the lipid profile, the oxidative modification of lipoproteins is essential for the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis and the physical properties of lipoproteins also appear to be involved in this process, suggesting that the particle size lipoproteins, through the analysis of its subfractions can provide more details of cardiovascular risk. It is well evidenced in the literature that children with neurological disorders often have difficulties with feeding impacting on nutrition. Studies show a reduction in growth velocity in children with ketogenic diet, however the results regarding changes in body composition are inconclusive. Thus, this paper aim to evaluate the effects of the ketogenic diet on lipid profile, oxidative processes and physical lipoproteins involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, in addition to changes in body composition, since these are not well understood in the literature.
