Abstract

The whiteflies are considered a group of pests of major importance worldwide. Bemisia tabaci biotype B, which damage and frequency have increased significantly each year, stands out as a major pest in cotton and one of the main responsible for the use of insecticides. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the resistance of cotton cultivars and lines in relation to B. silverleaf whitefly, by means of biological parameters related to the resistance. How attractive to adults, oviposition preference test with and without choice, egg-adult development, trichome density and colorimetric analysis. To this will be carried out experiments in greenhouse structures (greenhouses and cages) at the Center for Plant Health, (IAC), from March 2012 to March 2014. From 'screening' in 70 accessions of cotton germplasm bank of the IAC, will be selected about 20 genotypes with the lowest levels of infestation by this whitefly. Subsequently, these selected genotypes, along with two controls of susceptible germplasm will be evaluated in experiments on adult attractiveness and oviposition preference in free-choice test. In a randomized block design, these treatments will be repeated six times. Based on these two parameters (attractiveness and oviposition), will select the most resistant, with a maximum of eight for the experiment oviposition no choice. In this test, these more resistant genotypes susceptible control are evaluated individually, with the use of cage covered with fabric 'voile'. The design will also be a randomized complete block with six replications. Considering this germplasm in no-choice test will be conducted experiment to follow the development from egg to adult whitefly, which assess the duration and percentage of adult emergence in design identical to the previous. Also in this germplasm will be counting trichomes and colorimetric analysis for correlation with the previous parameters of resistance.
