The cities formed in the West São Paulo in the end of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century have, even now, a very homogeneous landscape, not just as regards a natural landscape, but also as regards the occupation form and the urban plan. It is to be noted that one series of cities were implanted next to rivers and others in the watershed. One hypothesis to be analyzed is the one about the fixedness of the unoccupied areas along the water courses - previously important partition landmarks of the farms that originated the urban tissue - which could be considered as historical references, but present itself as degraded places, without identity. The introduction of a São Paulo's network of cities in the first half of the 20th century could be considered as a landmark in the urban plan, although techniques and innovative instruments were not used. The biggest objective was to obtaining a quick return of the investment done. The geographical snippet selected for the research development, thus, is the study of valley bottom's area in four cities of São Paulo, located along one of the railway sidings - the "Araraquarense" - searching the current situation, analyzing the matter of the fixedness, the occupation form, their inclusion in the participative master plan, and other municipal laws and the relationship between the townspeople and the urban rivers and streams. The chosen cities were in the edge lines of the railway: Araraquara, São José do Rio Preto, Votuporanga and Santa Fé do Sul. Keywords: Urban Rivers, Valley Bottom, City's History, Landscape. (AU)
