Abstract

One of the consequences of the accelerated urban growth is the disorderly occupation, which exposes thousands of human lives to severe events. The importance of the natural vulnerability areas mapping must be recognized in order to prevent natural disasters is essential to avoid great tragedies and loss of lives and properties. Therefore, is extremely important, for the urban planning, to define analytical models that indicate the appropriate areas for the risk exposed people relocation. This project aims to develop a methodology for the identification of appropriate areas for people relocation at the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Region, based on GIS and Remote Sensing techniques. For the establishment of Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) classification rules will be used high resolution satellite images, which will allow the potential areas for people relocation. With the infrastructure data, the land use maps will be made. Therefore, Multi-criteria Analysis will be applied, indicating an analytical model to indicate the most appropriated area for people relocation. The internship at Geosystem Research Institute of Mississipi State University will allow: the development of the GEOBIA classification rules, the definition of the most appropriate methodology for the land use maps elaboration and the definition of the Multi-criteria Analysis approach. The expectation is to submit at least two papers for the publishing at relevant international journal of the research subject. (AU)
