Abstract

Children's books can be great allies in the promotion of science, since they can influence early on that public awareness regarding the issue, favoring the scientific popularization and consolidation of the scientific culture in society. Reading is an invitation for the child to think and ask new questions, however a children's book for the dissemination of science should not be a treatise on a scientific topic or a textbook. The child should not feel obligated but captivated reading it. This Master thesis aims at discussing children's literature as an instrument for the dissemination of science from a survey of books that articulate scientific knowledge about animals for children, focusing on the Brazilian fauna that is less portrayed, for example, than the large African mammals. It proposes to analyze the strategies adopted by the authors to disseminate scientific knowledge in the selection of books and evaluate the language, content and image used in the light of scientific communication. From this analysis, this research aims at validating the interactive book for children "Mami o quê?", about Brazilian mammals, produced as a monograph of the Specialization course on communication of science, technology and health at Fiocruz, RJ, through a study reception with the public interest, on the contents and images conveyed in the book Mami o quê?.
