The objective of this research is to understand the representations and practices of women about Pap cervical cancer through the analysis of social and cultural codes that operate in the health-illness. It is to understand the logic that guides practices in relation to women Pap smears and, thereby, analyze its consequences in preventing cervical cancer. This project will be accomplished through local ethnographies and semi-structured interviews with women and reproductive age 25-59 years living Keralux Garden, located in the East Zone of São Paulo. This is on the assumption that health and disease are symbolically constructed realities both physical and organic as coordinated by social relations and cultural, within which women experience their sexual and reproductive lives. Our hypothesis is that the representations built on Pap Pap guide the practices of women regarding prevention of cervical cancer, within a logic governed by social codes and cultural that operates in the disease process. The aim is to contribute to enrich the existing repertoire of representations and practices developed around the preventive screening of cervical-uterine cancer, aiming at the establishment of public health policies that address the socio-cultural aspects that operate in the disease process.
