Abstract

Lately, several studies have confirmed the heterogeneity of the genus Phormidium, and some genera (Phormidesmis, Wilmottia, Oxynema) have been separated from this polyphyletic generic unit by polyphasic analysis. Accordingly, our objective is to carry out the molecular analysis of the Phormidium tropical strains based on sequences of the 16S rRNA gene and the 16S - 23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS). However, whenever necessary, genes for multiple-loci (house-keeping genes such as rpoC1, cpcBA-IGS, or another marker) will be sequenced too, in order to establish the generic limits and interspecific relations more accurately. Previous studies carried out in Brazil, from sequences of the 16S rRNA/ ITS and morphologic analyses, indicate that most Brazilian strains may form new genera or they are transferred to those already described. Thus, this interchange program will allow the applicant to learn about new molecular techniques and also enable her to analyze the results through the analyses of other genes that have not yet been addressed in Brazil. These different studies will make it possible to characterize the tropical genera and species more accurately. This fact is important since most knowledge is related to species from temperate regions. Working together with Dr. Annick Wilmotte, one of the leading experts in the phylogeny of homocytous cyanobacteria, will contribute to the applicant's education, as well as to the research group's which she integrates, ensuring knowledge transfer to be applied in phylogenetic studies of tropical cyanobacteria.
