Abstract

Wastewaters as textiles are a major problems of aqueous discharges to be treated, not only because of the toxic contents, but also due to the coloration. In addition to causing environmental pollution reactive dyes and heavy metals cause serious health risks to humans. As the biological methods are not efficient to remove the color from textile effluents, several studies have been made to decolorize wastewater using adsorbents systems that are effective and low cost. The use of organic-inorganic hybrid materials as efficient adsorbents might allow the use of these systems for the treatment of industrial effluents. The main theme of this proposal is the use of siloxane-polyether hybrids for the treatment of effluent containing organic matter and heavy metals. These materials are prepared via sol-gel process and are based on a silica backbone containing an organic subphase that can provide both hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. Moreover, these materials are insoluble in water and exhibit unique properties such as mechanical strength, transparency and flexibility, and a material of great potential for various scientific and technological areas, including use in devices for controlled release of drugs. The main objective is to evaluate the use of siloxane-polyether organic-inorganic hybrids as efficient, selective and advanced material on adsorption of dyes and heavy metals aiming at an environmental aspect as in wastewater treatment.
