Abstract

The Theory of the Novel, by Georg Lukács, remains an important reference for Aesthetics and literary criticism. Without disregarding the discussion with these two areas, this project aims to highlight a frequently forgotten aspect of the work, that is, its connection with the reflections developed by the theoreticians of the so-called classical german sociology. During his formative period and especially during the writing of the book, Lukács was close to the intellectuals of the "Geisteswissenschaften", such as Georg Simmel and Max Weber. Therefore, we will address, on one side, the connection of The Theory of the Novel with the aesthetical thought of G.W.F. Hegel and Friederich Schlegel, references for Lukács' approach of literary genres alongside historic development and, on the other side, the interlocution with the reflections about the modern world made by Ferdinand Tonnies, Weber and Simmel.
