Abstract

Grinding is an abrasive machining process, which mainly aims to reduce the roughness, as to accuracy of the workpiece surface, or correct any irregularities of the surface. The cutting tool used in the process is the grinding wheel, which surface is abrasive, consisting of grains of aluminum oxide or silicon carbide, among others. There are several types of grinding wheel, so it is essential to have the detailed knowledge within the industry, on the wheel, so that it can be determined what is the best material to be machined with a given wheel, optimizing the grinding process. The use of the cutting fluid is essential to maintain the quality of the process, and also the way how this fluid is used to change the result of the finishing piece. There are two methods of cooling-lubrificantion that will be used in this project: minimum amount of lubricant and the conventional method. The material to be machined is the steel VP50, especially developed for the manufacture of molds for forming thermoplastic polymers. The grinding wheel in use, will be white aluminum oxide of medium hardness, ligand (alloy) glazed, of which six tests will be performed with variation of the method of lubricating and dip and speed of chip thickness between them. The analysis should be done by evaluating the output variables of the grinding process, such as the behavior of the tangential cutting force, roughness, acoustic emission, G ratio (volume of material removed / volume of wheel worn), optical microscopy and microhardness.
