Abstract

The advertisement call is the major acoustic signal emitted by males of amphibian anurans during the reproductive season. This line of evidence (Bioacoustics) has contributed to the recognition of new species as a valuable tool. Vocalizations (Biocoustics) represent a database with potential application in the detection of macroevolutionary patterns, which could be used directly as characters in phylogenetic analyses or as a posteriori indicators of the robustness of topologies. The genus Leptodactylus currently encompasses 89 species, distributed from southern North America and throughout the neotropical region. The taxonomy and interrelationship of its species have been revised in several studies, more recently, under a phylogenetic approach. The aim of this study is to contribute to the taxonomy and zoogeographic pattern of the genus Leptodactylus through the description/redescription of the advertisement call characters, so as to improve the taxonomic knowledge of the genus, potentially revealing part of its underestimated richness under a bioacoustic and morphological/morphometric perspective; to understand the evolution of the advertisement call of Leptodactylus from previously available phylogenetic hypotheses; and to test the robustness of its clades and phylogenetic position of problematic taxa from a priori phylogenetic hypotheses. The comparative methods of most interest in the study involve the detection of phylogenetic signal; reconstruction of ancestral character states; and adaptative hypothesis tests by associations/correlations among characters.
