Abstract

Pulmonary transplant is, nowadays, a fundamental part in the treatment of pulmonary terminal diseases, constituting an efficient therapeutic modality for patients with incapacity lung disease, progressive and in the final stage, being the more important ones: obstructive chronic lung disease, emphysema caused by deficiency of Alpha 1 antitrypsin, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary and cystic fibrosis. The number of transplants realized per year and the specialized centers of it have increased constantly. A lot of processes have been obtained in the way givers are approached, graft preservation, operatory technique, and the handling of immunosuppression. The classic scheme of immunosuppression undertaken after the transplant is constituted by three drugs: cyclosporine, azathioprine, and prednisone. However, there is a tendency towards the use of another scheme composed of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and prednisone. Many works of the medical literature emphasize the best results in the use of these drugs when compared to the classic scheme. However, all immunosuppressive drugs can cause side effects on transplanted patients, such as mucociliary clearance impairment and, consequently, an increase in morbidity and mortality due to respiratory infections.(AU)
