Abstract

The order Chiroptera has several unique features in its reproductive cycle, and although there are a large number of studies on its reproductive strategies and some investigations of its spermatogenesis, information about the hormonal control of the process are still scarce, with the existing studies limited to isolated measurements of the serum concentration of T and other hormones or to the location of the cells that produce gonadotropins. However, these studies show seasonal variations in the production of FSH, LH and T, as well as in the expression of their receptors, in some species. These oscillations appear to be linked to reproductive annual variations, where there is a greater expression during periods of high spermatogenic activity in relation to periods of testicular regression or periods of less activity. Myotis nigricans, an exclusively Neotropical species of vespertilionid bat, has two periods of testicular regression in the same annual reproductive cycle, which are not directly linked to apoptosis and seems to be little influenced by abiotic factors. However, the details of their regulation are still uncertain, showing that the characterization of the hormonal variations linked to each stage of its reproductive cycle is interesting, in order to elucidate the process in this species, as well as to help in understanding the action of each of its components in the regulation of bat reproduction.
