Abstract

This "Doutorado Direto" project aims to access the feasibility of the production and thermo-mechanical processing, with a subsequent microstructural characterization, of the NiTiAg ternary shape memory alloys. This is a pioneer study in Brazil, even in a world level, once only four papers could be found out, showing the prime character required for a PhD projects. It is a NiTi-based shape memory alloys which has antibacterial properties, soon, a possible biomaterial for future applications. NiTiAg alloys ingots of about 100g will be produced by arc remelting, with variables contents of nickel, titanium and silver. From melting procedure, evaluations regarding the chemical homogeneity, Ag-yielding and impurities contents, in addition to the microstructure analysis will be performed. Thermo-mechanical processing procedures by rotary swaging, rolling and drawing will be developed aspiring wires and strips. Particular heat treatments for the thermo-mechanical processing and specific properties should also be developed. Lastly, shape memory properties, superelasticity and martensitic transition temperatures will be studied. The chemical characterization of the ingots will be done by chemical wet assays, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques, and possibly transmission electron microscopy will be used to follow the microstructures up throughout the work. Shape memory effect and superelasticity characterizations will be made by tensile tests, DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer) analysis. (AU)
