Abstract

The cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) are conditions which result in undesired communication between the oral and nasal cavities during speech production. Among the speech disorders related to cleft palate or VPD, the hypernasality is one of the most severe. There are some clinical and instrumental procedures available to assess presence and type of VPD. Perceptual assessment of speech is considered as the first method to diagnose presence of VPD, and it is essential for the diagnostic and the treatment choice. The use of standartized and normatized instrumental measurements to assess velopharyngeal function has the aim of assisting and complement the clinical assessment. More specifically, the nasometer was originally developed to provide objective measures of nasality of speech. There is a growing quest in the literature and in the improvement and standardization of the methodology employed in the clinical diagnosis of VPD, and therefore, this study aims to contribute to it. Objective: To verify the agreement between the perceptual judgments of speech nasality and nasalance scores. Methods: The sample will consist of 100 patients, with unilateral cleft lip and palate, who have undergone palatal surgery between 9 and 18 months of age. The patients to be selected have to have undergone clinical evaluation of speech, including judgment of nasality of speech in 4-point scale and the Test of Cul de Sac Hypernasality in the same date of nasometry, at the ranging age of 8 to 12 years.
