Abstract

This project intends to investigate the presence, circulation and reception of Brazilian novels in Portugal in the second half of the 19th century, moment when this gender was already consolidated in both countries and thus gained the attention not only from readers but also from publishers, booksellers and critics. Therefore, we will try to examine specific primary sources, such as bookseller catalogs, as well as library and reading offices catalogs. Furthermore, we will try to find and analyses novel ads and critical reception texts in Portuguese journals. This project is part of the postdoctoral research we undertake now (Brazilians in Portugal and Portuguese in Brazil: novels that crossed the Atlantic in the second half of the 19th century) linked to another thematic project of international cooperation, titled "The transatlantic print circulation - the globalization of culture in the nineteenth century", both sponsored by FAPESP.
