Abstract

Glauber Rocha (1939-1981), Brazilian filmmaker and member of Cinema Novo, made a unique journey into the Latin American's cinematic traditions. In the mid 1960s, when the film Black God, White Devil was released in Europe, the young Brazilian filmmaker can meet prestigious critics and filmmakers from Europe. His films have been seen by foreign critics from Europe, with an immediate repercussion never before seen by another Brazilian filmmaker. In addition to films, Glauber, like no other Brazilian artists of the period, could write articles in European's magazines and newspaper and his ideas could circulate among the most important artists and intellectuals in the 1960s in Europe. In France, the critical reception of his films has brought fame and prestige: many critics of magazines (such as Cahiers du Cinema and Positif) became advocates of Brazilian filmmaker and their vehicles recognized the contributions of Brazilian Cinema Novo. This research project about the critical reception in France of the films Black God, White Devil (1964) and Entranced Earth (1967) intends to make a documentary survey into three major French archives (Bibliothèque Nationale de France, La Française and Cinemateque Centre George Pompidou), examining the French criticism toward Glauber Rocha and his films.
