Abstract

The lack of therapeutic alternatives for fish disease force fish farmers to use drugs legislated for other animal species or not legislated drugs. Brazil is a country that has a high potential for aquaculture development, it is important that pharmaceutic industries lead studies for the development of safe treatments to contribute for for this sector growth bringing benefits not only for fish farmers but also for final consumers. Knowledge of etiological agent will be essencial for the pharmacologycal option for the control and prevent bacteria fish disease in pacu, one of the most important indigenous species for Brazilian aquaculture and allow the development of treatments not causing damage for the environment and drugs resistance, ensuring safe foods for consumers and the acceptance of international market. The development of alternative drugs for aquaculture in Brazil is new and will provide redution of prejudice related to the lack of quality and at the same time reduce the use of antibiotics. Knowing and controling the microbiologic caractheristics regarding to animal health in fish is a prerequisite for compliance and certification of products aimed at marketing and exportation. (AU)
