Abstract

The research and development of porous materials have attracted considerable interest because of the many applications of these materials, such as zeolites and mesoporous silicas. A new class of porous materials has been increasing in recent years, so-called metal-organic frameworks, MOFs which are composed of ions or metal clusters linked by organic ligands, forming crystalline structures with porosities. MOFs are inorganic-organic hybrids that exhibit high surface area stability and high porosity, which make them interesting for applications in separation and storage of gases such as catalysts and controlled release of drugs. Concerning to the latter application, the RMOs have been shown great loading capacity of drugs due to their structural characteristics, such as large pore volume and high surface area. Among these, was the MIL-101 (Cr) which features one of the largest surface areas that is known and MIL-101 (Fe) iron-containing, biocompatible element, and also has a high surface area. This project aims to the synthesis and characterization of MIL-101 (Cr) and MIL-101 (Fe) and their analogues, in order to apply them in the loading and controlled release of drugs. (AU)
