The major urban centers are known to be the main polluters of both aquatic systems due to release a variety of chemicals and intense as the various uses of natural and synthetic chemicals. When these effluents and waste are introduced to water bodies become a source of contaminants present serious risks and difficult to control or management, given the presence of hazardous compounds. In this context searching through treatments to achieve suitable quality of water, which may present a high degree of complexity. Studies of processes capable of reducing the concentration of free metal ion, for example, complexation reactions show a significant decreasing of the toxicity. In the aquatic environment, metals, metalloids and endocrine disruptors may complex with dissolved organic matter (humic substances) reducing its toxicity. However, there are few articles available in the literature that show the influence of the SHA in particular, the fractions of different molecular sizes, the toxicity of metals, metalloids and endocrine disruptors in aquatic environments. Thus, the aim of this project is to evaluate the influence of the SHA on the toxicity of contaminants in the environment and can contribute to the improvement of water quality assessment of water bodies, not just restricting the evaluation to the concentration of the contaminant species in the aquatic system.
